XIXth Commonwealth Games 2010 will be held in Delhi – the national capital of India during 03 to 14 October 2010. This international sports extravaganza is second to Olympic Games only. Some people also term these games as Mini Olympics. A total of 54 member countries of Commonwealth Union will be participating in these games and there will be 71 sports teams in all. Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the nodal body which is responsible for the direction and control of Commonwealth Games.
First commonwealth games (CWG) were held in 1930 and in those games, women participated in swimming events only. Present day CWG includes may games which are played in commonwealth countries like Netball, Lawn Bowls and Rugby Seven. So far, 6 countries viz. Australia, England, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales have participated in all commonwealth games.
To meet the requirement of living space for sports persons and tourists, 25,000 additional rooms have been constructed in Delhi. Commonwealth Games Village has been constructed near the banks of Yamuna river which is equipped with state of the art facilities and infrastructure. Besides this, Delhi Government has also augmented Delhi Metro rail service and Delhi Transport Corporation bus service. Indira Gandhi International Airport has been upgraded, modernized and expanded to meet the increased flow of air traffic.
Commonwealth Games 2010 News would be incomplete with the mention of Shera. Actually, Shera is the mascot of XIX Commonwealth Games. This name is derived from the Hindi name Sher which means the tiger. Shera embodies values which India is proud of – majesty, grace, power & charisma and represents a global, intelligent Indian. The mascot also reminds us of the fragile environment in which tigers are living and our responsibility to save them and their environment.

The Queen’s baton relay arrived in Delhi on 03 October 2010 after visiting 70 countries of the commonwealth Union. The baton was relayed from The Buckingham Palace with the message of her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II for the athletes. The opening and closing ceremonies of CWG will be held in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Delhi will be offering a host of amenities to the athletes. These include state of the art health facilities and tight vigil at the sport venues. The latest Commonwealth Games 2010 news is that Delhi Government will be offering free sightseeing of the world famous Taj Mahal for all athletes who will participate in games. The white marble monument of love has recently been declared one of the Seven Wonders of the World by UNESCO.
