Commonwealth games are organized every four years. This time, this sports extravaganza will be held in Delhi – capital of India from 03 to 14 October 2010. These multinational sports events will attract a large number of sportsperson and sport tourists to the commonwealth games 2010 venue. Delhi, being the host city of commonwealth games will see a large influx of visitors. The purpose of these games is to enhance economic co-operation and good governance between the participating nations.
A total of 17 major game events will be organized in Delhi during the period. 25,000 additional rooms have been built in Delhi to meet the requirement of foreign tourists and sports persons. Majority of these rooms are in Commonwealth Games Village. The city is fast gearing up for the event as most of the games will be held here. Commonwealth games 2010 venues are:
- Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex- Opening and closing ceremonies, Athletics, Weightlifting and Lawn Bowls events will be held here.
- Yamuna Sports Complex will be the venue for Archery and Table Tennis.
- Indira Gandhi Sports Complex will be venue for Cycling, Gymnastics, and Wrestling.
- Hockey and Archery Finals will be held in MDC National Stadium Complex-
- Swimming and Boxing will be held in Talkatora Garden Complex and
- Badminton and Squash will be held in Siri Fort Sports Complex
Commonwealth Games village has been constructed near Akshardham Temple in East Delhi. It is equipped with well furnished rooms, state of the art facilities, robust infrastructure and round the clock security check up. All commonwealth games 2010 venues have been linked by Delhi Metro rail service and Delhi Transport Corporation bus service. These games are being termed as Green Games by many as India Government and commonwealth games organizing committee have taken measures to minimize the emission of carbon dioxide and other pollutants during the games. Thyagaraj Stadium is going to be the model Green Stadium for XIX commonwealth games.
