Brief History
Foundation of Jaipur was laid by Sawai Raja Jai Singh in 1727. It was the first planned city of North India. The city’s history dates back to 12th century when Kachchwaha warrior clan first settled near Old Fort Palace of Amber in Aravali Hills. After developing close bonds with Mogul rulers, Sawai Jai Singh envisioned his dream project – the building of Jaipur city. Eminent architect Vidyadhar Bhattacharya was asked to design the “Pink City.” The famous pink color symbolizing “welcome” was given to the city by Raja Ram Singh II when he received Prince of Wales in 1876. Even to date, the new monuments in the city are uniformly raised in pink. After Jai Singh’s death in 1773, the city was collectively supervised by the British with the name Rajputana. After independence of India in 1947, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Rajpur merged to form the state of Rajasthan with Jaipur as its capital.
