Overview

Below is the daily itinerary for 7 days Machame route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

The seven-day Machame is scheduled perfectly to make climbing mount Kilimanjaro a memorable experience. On the 7 days Machame route, we split the Barranco to Barafu trek into two days, allowing for a short day just before climbing the summit.

This is important because the summit day starts very early, around midnight, so climbers are deprived of sleep as they start the most difficult day on the mountain. By having a short day in advance, climbers can rest better.

This itinerary is very popular and used by most Kilimanjaro climbers.

•Habitat: Arctic

This is the D day of your 7 days Machame route as we will start climbing the summit very early in the morning (from midnight to 2 am). We continue our route to the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers.

Next, we head northwest and climb through large scree to Stella Point on the rim of the crater. This is the most physically and mentally difficult part of the hike.

At Stella Point, (18,600 feet) we will stop for a short break and be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you have ever seen (weather permitting).

From Stella Point, you can find snow throughout an hour-long ascent to the top. At Uhuru Peak, you will have reached the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the African continent. The faster hikers will see the sunrise from the top.

From the top, we now make our descent continuing straight to Mweka Hut camp, stopping at Barafu for lunch. You will need gaiters and hiking poles for the gravel going down.

Mweka camp is located in the upper part of the forest and you can expect fog or rain in the late afternoon. Later, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-deserved rest.

DAY 7: Mweka Camp to Moshi
DAY 7: Mweka Camp to Moshi

•Elevation (ft): 10,000ft to 5,400ft
•Distance: 10 km
•Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
•Habitat: Rain Forest

After breakfast, we continue the descent to the gate of Mweka Park to receive your summit certificates. At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy so that you will use Gaiters and hiking poles to help you.

Shorts and t-shirts will probably be enough to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothes on hand). From the gate, we continue one more hour to the village of Mweka. A vehicle and a guide will be waiting for you in Mweka village to take you back to Moshi's hotel.
